Logistics Research

In order to be at the forefront of the latest trends and development in the logistic market, we invest heavily in logistics research. Thereby, Viaboxx also has been awarded the seal "Innovative through research" (Siegel “Innovativ durch Forschung”) by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wirtschaft (Donors' association for the promotion of humanities and sciences in Germany).  The Stifterverband awards the seal to companies for their engagement in research and development (R&D) and the special responsibility they assume for the country and its society.

We are currently involved in the following projects:

Track4Goods

The Track4Goods project’s objective is to develop a high-resolution tracking system for consignments in general cargo shipping facilities with camera-based environmental perception modules.

The development is realized within a cooperation project with the collaboration of one SME partner (Viaboxx GmbH) and one research partner (Otto-von-Guericke University). A prototypical setup and trial of the system will take place in the Application Center for intelligent logistics facilities in the Saxony-Anhalt Galileo Test Bed.

The objective of the sub-project which Viaboxx is working on, is to develop real-time capable methods for consignment related process analysis and predictions for process optimization based on a high-resolution tracking of consignments in general cargo logistics facilities.

This R&D project has emerged from the network “NekoS” which is part of the Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM - Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand) and is supported by the network’s management facility, the Center for product, process and process innovation (ZPVP - Zentrum für Produkt-, Verfahrens- und Prozessinnovationen) - the Experimental Factory (Experimentelle Fabrik) from Magdeburg.

 

Multisensor

The Multisensor project addresses one of the key problems in logistics, the process-integrated acquisition of volume parameters in a manual or partially-automated environment, meaning without any explicit nor perceptible execution of measurement by an operator. For this purpose, 3D-multisensor systems for all-round detection and real-time analysis of logistical objects is developed within the project.

The development is realized within a cooperation project with the collaboration of two SME partners (Thorsis Technologies GmbH, Viaboxx GmbH) and two research partners (Otto-von-Guericke University, Fraunhofer IFF).

The objective of the sub-project which Viaboxx is working on, is to develop logistics applications based on the 3D-multisensor systems. In particular, this comprises the usage of the multisensor system, which should be adapted to and synchronized with the process, with auto-ID technologies, logistics software and operating interfaces. The major challenge here is to match the measured volume to the respective consignment number.

This R&D project has emerged from the network “Assistance in Logistics” (Assistenz in der Logistik) which is part of the Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM - Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand) and is supported within the network “NekoS” by the network’s management facility, the Center for product, process and process innovation (ZPVP - Zentrum für Produkt-, Verfahrens- und Prozessinnovationen) / Experimental Factory (Experimentelle Fabrik) from Magdeburg.

ESecLog

The ESecLog (Enhanced Security for Logistics) project’s objective was to safeguard air freight process chains by developing and deploying secure freight fingerprints based on multiscan technologies with UHF RFID. The freight fingerprint disburdens the control processes in the air freight sector as secure freight is audit-proofly marked. The project hereby distinguished between tamper-proof freight tracking along the supply chain and the creation of audit-proof processes at the air freight hub to consolidate verified freight structures.

The development has been realized within a cooperation project with the following partners:

Viaboxx’s specific objective in this project was to develop the IT repository. The IT repository gathers and provides the complete data, and when required partial data, on a freight fingerprint at a control point. This should make it possible to speed up the safety check processes at control points in order to ensure a quick but safe control and to meet the needs of future growth rates in air freight traffic.

The overarching project management happened with the participation of all development partners and under the coordination of Fraunhofer IFFsupported by BIBA.

V-Scan

In the general cargo logistics sector, it is essential to know how large the goods to be transported actually are. It is advisable to gather this information as early as possible in the transport chain and to use it in the following steps.
The V-Scan project’s objective was to develop a sensor-based low-cost analysis system, that significantly enhances the performance of logistical operations by optimally using stationary and dynamic freight capacities and loading areas. The focus was on the volume-based freight capacity management between logistics center and truck. In this research project, a measurement technology has been developed for the van, in order to optimally use the volume capacities of staging areas in logistics centers and the truck’s hold.

Thereby, an embedded system has been developed which is based on a network of special depth image sensors for the volume scan, a fast communication system and an efficient data evaluation, in order to allow a flexible and simple use of the information and communication technologies in logistics applications. The real-time capable solution will hence allow the development of ad hoc logistics services on a new level.
There are two fields of application, routing of transport vehicles and prozess optimization in the loading area, for which two user-related services have been developed: based on the capacity information of the so-called “Loading Space Management” (LSM) for the routing of transport vehicles and based on the volume information of the so-called “Loading Area Management” (LAM) for optimizing storage operations.

The development has been realized within a cooperation project with the collaboration of two SME partners (ifak System GmbH (now Thorsis Technologies GmbH), Viaboxx GmbH) and one research partner (Fraunhofer IFF).

Viaboxx’s specific objective in this project was to expand a route optimization software by dynamically integrated ad hoc freight orders and consideration of actual load capacities of transport vehicles.

The overarching project management happened with the participation of all development partners and under the coordination of Fraunhofer IFF.
